Questions to think about while reading the following articles:

  • Credibility: Is the author or speaker well informed on the subject?
  • Bias: Does the author omit any information or "stretch" the truth to make his/her claim seem more valid?
  • Balance: Does the author offer alternative theories and give them equal time?
  • Sources: How well are the claims supported?  What evidence is offered?

Open Discussion Questions

With a partner or in a small group, discuss the following questions.

  1. What are the similarities or differences between Rey’s clothing and that of Obi Wan Kenobi or Luke Skywalker?
  2. Who do you think Rey is waiting for on Jakku?
  3. What objects do we see at Rey’s “home” in the fallen AT AT Walker on Jakku?
  4. Rey clearly has a British accent.  What accent does Luke have?  Obi Wan? What, if any, significance could this have?
  5. Discuss Rey’s piloting abilities and any significance it may have in relation to other characters.  Is it “ship specific”?
  6. What languages and characters does Rey understand?  Is this significant in any way?
  7. Maz Canata says to Rey after her vision in the basement of Maz’s castle: “That lightsaber was Luke’s. And his father’s before him. It reached out to you.” Can this be used to confirm or deny the father/daughter relationship between Luke and Rey?
  8. Who is more powerful with the Force? Kylo Ren or Rey?
  9. Why do you think Rey made the journey at the end of the film and not Leia?

Mini Debate

With a partner or in a group divided into 2, conduct a debate adopting the two positions outlined below.  Once you have chosen your positions take some time to prepare your debate based on the materials presented above.

Position A.
You firmly believe that after Kenobi delivered the newly born Luke Skywalker to his aunt and uncle on Tatooine, “Ben” Kenobi fathered children during his 19 year exile there. Thus as a result, Rey is his direct descendant - most likely his granddaughter.  Use the evidence from the film as well as the articles and videos above to formulate and defend your position.

Position B.
Without a doubt you believe that after Luke Skywalker defeated the emperor and brought his father, Darth Vader back to light side of the force, he fell in love, married and had at least one child during the time preceding the events in The Force Awakens.  Construct your argument using evidence from the film as well as the videos and articles above.
